ERIC W. STILES SR.
THE NON-ITALIAN, ITALIAN MASTER TAILOR

Currently, I am the "Non-Italian Italian" master tailor for one of Chicago's most expensive men's clothing boutiques. Prior to working
here, I was the non-Italian master tailor, fitter and supervisor for Giorgio Armani, Polo-Ralph Lauren as well as assistant head tailor
for Marshall Fields, Bigsby & Kruthers, Brittany Ltd. , Whitehouse & Hardy, Turner Brothers, Robert Vance Ltd., and others. Because I
am not of Italian heritage, it was a challenge for me to enter the sacred world of Italian tailoring. Regardless of their abilities
and skills, no one wanted to hire a non-Italian tailor. For me, that changed in late 1975 when I was hired to work for Brittany
Ltd. Because I was not Italian or trained in Italy, Nick Partipillo, the shop supervisor wanted me to demonstrate my skills.
Fortunately for me, I had previously apprenticed under some Italian tailors.
- - - - - -
Nick was quite impressed with my talent and told me I was a very good non-Italian tailor and he hired me on the spot. Nick said
I mastered many of the specialized Italian tailoring techniques and he immediately brought me under his tutelage. He said I was
a "smooooth", not smooth, but a "smooooth" tailor. I always enjoyed hearing Nick say that word the way only he could say it! The
break I received at Brittany, Ltd. paved the way for me to gain acceptance among other Italian tailors as a "Non-Italian Italian
tailor". With Nick's training, I continued to learn many other specialized techniques and I absorbed
everything he taught me like a sponge.
- - - - - -
Because Nick had been one of the top tailors for Pucci, a major high-end custom shop on Michigan Avenue, I was very excited and
honored that he took interest in me. One year later, I was making custom clothing for some of Nick's private clients. He would
cut out the garments and I would take them home to assemble them. We were an exceptional team, and I was paid well. Two years
later, however, I ended my employment at Brittany Ltd. because Nick became ill and the company wanted him to reduce his work
schedule from 6 days to only 3 days per week. The company tried to persuade Nick to allow me to become his so-called
replacement. I held Nick in very high esteem so, out of my abiding loyalty to him and respect for our friendship, I
decided to seek employment at Whitehouse and Hardy, which was another high-end store directly across the
street from Brittany Ltd.
- - - - - -
It was because of Nick that my non-Italian tailoring techniques became equal to those of many Italian tailors. Never one to be
complacent, I began challenging myself to do better and faster using only the traditional Italian construction techniques Nick
taught me. As a result of pushing myself far beyond normal limits, my career accelerated. I had finally achieved complete
acceptance as a Master Tailor in the exclusive circle of Italian tailors, so finding quality work became much easier.
- - - - - -
After years of working for others, I decided to establish my own business, so in 1995 I opened the EWS Fashion Academy (1) in
Chicago's Beverly Hills community. Due to the success of this business, I was inspired to establish the EWS Fashion Academy
(2) in downtown Oak Park, Illinois 1998. A year later, I began operating the EWS Alteration and Repair Shop out of my Beverly
location. In 2006, I decided to open a third academy in Riverwoods, Illinois. In 2009 I decided to relocate the school in
Beverly to Evergreen Park, Illinois, where live instruction was offered until June 2015.
- - - - - -
In 2008, I developed online tailoring and fashion design courses, which were offered through over 60 colleges in 35 states and 1
college in Canada. I offered classes in Sewing/Tailoring, Pattern Making, Sample Garment Making, Alteration/Repairs, Fashion Draping,
Garment Construction and MTM-Made To Measure Procedures. My expert online classes were offered through more colleges and in more
locations than any other online instructor in the United States or Canada.
- - - - - -
I began sewing at the age of eleven simply because I wanted to learn how to make expensive-looking clothes for myself, but
ultimately became the head "Non-Italian Italian" tailor for two major European designers and one major domestic designer.
Now, once again, I am the head "Non-Italian Italian" tailor for one of the most expensive men's clothing boutiques
in Chicago. I came back to the working tailoring world because I missed do the type of work that I have worked
so hard to learn and love.
- - - - - -
A highlight of my working with this boutique was when they sent me to Penne, Italy in February 2016 to tour their factories and
their clothing construction techniques, which includes the traditional methods of Italian Bespoke tailoring, but with many
new innovations and improvements. Because of this developmental opportunity, I am able to offer more advanced online
tailoring and clothing construction classes to my students around the world.
- - - - - -
Over the years, my non-Italian, Italian designing talents and teaching skills have been featured in more than 25 news
publications, including Crain's Chicago Business and twice in the Chicago Tribune. Most recently, my Fashion Academy
in Evergreen Park was featured during a local broadcast of ABC Channel 7 Chicago News. Award-winning reporter,
Leah Hope, hosted the segment titled "Back To Basics: Sewing To Save Money".
