For the best learning experience, begin with Sewing #1 — Beginning Sewing Fundamentals and Pattern Making #1 — The Quarter Scale Skirt Pattern. Together, they provide the professional foundation for future online classes.
Students are advised to register for both Session #1 and Session #2 of Sewing #1 and Pattern Making #1.
This ensures that Session #2 is already available as soon as Session #1 is completed.
Waiting to register may cause you to miss Session #2 and delay your progress until it is offered again.
Complete each session within one full week and begin on Day One.
No extensions are given. Please plan your schedule carefully.
After completing the first two sessions, continue registering for each remaining session as it becomes available.

Course Series One
Sewing #1 — Beginning Sewing Fundamentals
Begin with the essential professional habits every student must learn before moving forward: proper posture, machine control, accuracy practice, fabric preparation, cutting and basic seam construction.
Sewing #1A — Professional Sewing Fundamentals: Proper Sitting Position, Posture & Foot Control
Learn the correct sitting position, body posture, machine placement and professional foot-control techniques. These fundamentals help you develop smooth machine control, confidence and the proper habits needed for every sewing class that follows.
Sewing #1B — Building Control Through Professional Sewing Accuracy Drills
Build accuracy and control through four carefully designed sewing exercises. The emphasis is on slow, consistent stitching, straight lines and precision rather than speed, helping you develop dependable machine skills.
Sewing #1C — Fabric Preparation, Accurate Cutting and Basic Seam Construction
Learn how to prepare fabric, identify and work with the grainline, measure and mark accurately, cut correctly, pin properly and construct basic seams. This session brings together the control and accuracy skills developed in Sewing #1A and #1B.
Course Series Two
Sewing #2 — Constructing the Watch Pocket
Continue building your sewing accuracy through the step-by-step construction of four professional watch-pocket samples using denim, muslin, precise marking, stitching, pressing and facing techniques.
Sewing #2A — Preparing and Sewing the Watch-Pocket Pieces
Begin by marking the denim and muslin pieces needed to construct four watch pockets. You’ll mark the stitching lines, sew accurately on each line, use backstitching to secure every seam, and finger-press the completed seams open in preparation for the next step.
Sewing #2B — Attaching and Folding the First Muslin Piece
Using one of the two muslin pieces, center it over the pressed-open seam and stitch it securely to the denim. You’ll then fold the first muslin piece over and stitch it in place, repeating the complete process on all four watch-pocket samples.
Sewing #2C — Completing and Opening All Four Watch Pockets
For two pockets, align the second muslin piece with the first, stitch it in place, mark the final pocket lines, and sew along them. The remaining two pockets will be completed with facings that must be cut, pressed and sewn into position. After the facings are attached, all four pockets will be completely finished and opened. Before Sewing #2D, students must order the proper sewing thimble and recommended hand-sewing needles.
Sewing #2D — Special Hand-Stitching Class: Using the Needle and Thimble
This class is devoted entirely to learning how to properly hold and control a hand-sewing needle and correctly use a sewing thimble. You will learn three different professional hand stitches and complete two stitch-practice pads. These skills will be used in later sewing, tailoring, pattern making and garment-construction classes.

Pattern Making #1 — The Quarter Scale Skirt Pattern
Begin with the essential rules, tools and directions of professional pattern drafting, then progress step by step through the completion of your first quarter-scale skirt pattern.
Pattern Making #1A — The Quarter Scale Skirt Pattern: Beginning Pattern Drafting
Every professional pattern maker begins with a strong foundation. In this first session, you’ll learn the essential principles of pattern drafting before creating your first pattern. You’ll discover how to properly use the L-square, understand drafting terminology, and learn the professional rules of drafting, including Drafting Power, “Square,” “On” and “From.” You’ll also learn what drafting directions mean and how they are used. These basic skills will prepare you for every pattern you create in the future.
Pattern Making #1B — Beginning the Quarter Scale Skirt Pattern
Continue building on the skills learned in Pattern Making #1A as you begin drafting your first quarter-scale skirt pattern. You’ll learn which measurements are required, what each measurement means, and how those measurements are applied to the pattern. You’ll continue perfecting your use of the L-square and establish the main foundation lines needed to begin the skirt pattern.
Pattern Making #1C — Creating the Side Seams and Completing the Front Skirt Pattern
Continue from Pattern Making #1B by creating the side seam and center-back line for the skirt pattern. You will apply these lines to all three measurement examples, begin shaping the waistline, establish the front side seam and complete the full front section of the quarter-scale skirt pattern.
Pattern Making #1D — Completing the Back Waistline and Finishing the Skirt Pattern
Complete the Pattern Making #1 Series by creating and refining the back waistline, completing the back section and carefully checking the finished quarter-scale skirt pattern. By the end of this session, both the front and back pattern sections will be complete and ready for the next level of professional pattern-making instruction.

Course Series Four
Pattern Making #2 — The Full-Scale Skirt Pattern
Progress from quarter-scale drafting to a full-scale skirt pattern created from your own measurements or those of a friend, then prepare the hand-stitching skills needed for muslin construction.
Pattern Making #2A — Measurements, Drafting Paper and Full-Scale Pattern Tools
Learn how to take the correct body measurements needed for a full-scale skirt pattern. You’ll work from your own measurements or those of a friend and become familiar with the proper drafting craft paper and professional drafting tools used throughout the course. Students must purchase the required drafting paper and drafting tools before beginning this session.
Pattern Making #2B — Drafting the Full-Scale Front Skirt Pattern
Using the measurements, paper and tools prepared in Pattern Making #2A, begin drafting the front section of your full-scale skirt pattern. You’ll work through each required construction line, measurement and shaping step until the complete front pattern is finished.
Pattern Making #2C — Drafting the Full-Scale Back Skirt Pattern
Continue the full-scale skirt pattern by drafting the complete back section. You’ll apply the proper measurements, construction lines and shaping methods until the back pattern is finished and both the front and back drafts are ready for the next stage.
Pattern Making #2D — Preparing the Completed Pattern for Muslin Construction
Review and prepare your completed full-scale front and back skirt patterns for the next stage of the course. The professional needle-and-thimble skills learned earlier in Sewing #2D will be required in the next class. You will use those skills when marking the pattern onto muslin, adding the required seam allowances, cutting the muslin pieces, and constructing the skirt for its first try-on and fitting. Continue practicing your hand stitches so you are fully prepared to work accurately and confidently.

Course Series Five
Cloning Jeans #1 — Professional Jeans Cloning & Construction
Learn the complete professional process of cloning a favorite pair of jeans without taking the original garment apart or damaging it. Progress step by step from marking the jeans and creating the complete pattern to laying out and cutting the fabric, constructing the pockets, zipper, belt loops, seams and rivets, and completing the final professional finishing and pressing.
Cloning Jeans #1A — Marking the Front and Back of the Jeans
Begin by professionally marking the front and back of the original jeans. These markings establish the important shapes, lines and reference points needed to begin creating the complete set of jean pattern pieces while keeping the original jeans completely intact.
Cloning Jeans #1B — Creating the Complete Jeans Pattern
Using drafting paper and the markings made on the original jeans, create the front, back and all additional pattern pieces needed for the complete jeans pattern. Add the required seam allowances, check the completed pattern and cut out each paper pattern piece for use.
Cloning Jeans #1C — Pattern Layout, Marking & Cutting the Fabric
Learn how to correctly position the newly created pattern pieces on the fabric. The pieces are properly laid out, marked and accurately cut in preparation for professional construction.
Cloning Jeans #1D — Constructing the Front & Back Pockets
Begin the professional construction of the jeans by preparing and completing the front and back pocket areas, including the important details needed for correct placement, appearance and durability.
Cloning Jeans #1E — Continuing the Jeans Construction
Continue construction by working with the belt loops, zipper, rivets and major seams. These important steps bring the individual jean components together into the complete garment.
Cloning Jeans #1F — Completing & Professionally Finishing the Jeans
Complete the remaining construction and final details, then perform the professional final pressing needed to properly shape, finish and present the completed pair of cloned jeans.

Renowned for his precision, craftsmanship and approachable teaching style, Mr. Stiles has guided and inspired countless aspiring designers, sewers, tailors, alterations specialists and industry professionals.
