The Story Behind the Return

From 61 Colleges to a New Independent Beginning

For more than four years, Eric W. Stiles Sr. taught online through 61 colleges throughout the United States and two provinces in Canada. Thousands of students were able to study sewing, tailoring, pattern making, garment construction, and other professional fashion subjects from their own homes.

As the program continued to grow, managing instruction through so many colleges eventually became more than one person could effectively handle. Rather than allow the quality of the instruction to suffer, Stiles made the difficult decision to step away, reorganize, and rethink how online fashion education could better serve students.

That time away gave him the clarity he needed. Instead of returning through colleges, he will now offer the classes independently through EWS Academy. This new approach allows him to reconnect directly with students while making professional instruction much more affordable.

Start Your Professional Journey the Right Way

For the best learning experience, begin with Sewing #1 — Beginning Sewing Fundamentals and Pattern Making #1 — The Quarter Scale Skirt Pattern. Together, they provide the professional foundation for future online classes.

Students are advised to register for both Session #1 and Session #2 of Sewing #1 and Pattern Making #1.
This ensures that Session #2 is already available as soon as Session #1 is completed.
Waiting to register may cause you to miss Session #2 and delay your progress until it is offered again.
Complete each session within one full week and begin on Day One.
No extensions are given. Please plan your schedule carefully.
After completing the first two sessions, continue registering for each remaining session as it becomes available.

Professional Sewing Fundamentals: Proper Sitting Position, Posture & Foot Control

Before learning to sew, every student must first develop proper sewing habits. In this session, you’ll learn the correct sitting position, body posture, machine placement, and professional foot-control techniques used by experienced sewers and tailors. You’ll begin practicing smooth, controlled foot operation to develop confidence, accuracy, and consistency. These essential fundamentals are the foundation for everything that follows and should never be skipped.

Building Control Through Professional Sewing Accuracy Drills

Now that you’ve learned proper posture and foot control, you’ll begin sewing with four carefully designed practice drills that build precision and confidence. These are not speed drills—they are accuracy drills. Students should make multiple copies of each exercise and practice only one drill per day, sewing slowly and concentrating on control, straight stitching, and consistency before moving on to the next drill.

Begin with the essential rules, tools and directions of professional pattern drafting, then progress step by step through the completion of your first quarter-scale skirt pattern.

The Quarter Scale Skirt Pattern: Beginning Pattern Drafting

Every professional pattern maker begins with a strong foundation. In this first session, you’ll learn the essential principles of pattern drafting before creating your first pattern. You’ll discover how to properly use the L-square, understand drafting terminology, and learn the professional rules of drafting, including Drafting Power, “Square,” “On” and “From.” You’ll also learn what drafting directions mean and how they are used. These basic skills will prepare you for every pattern you create in the future.

Beginning the Quarter Scale Skirt Pattern

Continue building on the skills learned in Pattern Making #1A as you begin drafting your first quarter-scale skirt pattern. You’ll learn which measurements are required, what each measurement means, and how those measurements are applied to the pattern. You’ll continue perfecting your use of the L-square and establish the main foundation lines needed to begin the skirt pattern.

Continue from Pattern Making #1B by creating the side seam and center-back line for the skirt pattern. You will apply these lines to all three measurement examples, begin shaping the waistline, establish the front side seam and complete the full front section of the quarter-scale skirt pattern.

Completing the Back Waistline and Finishing the Skirt Pattern

By the end of this session, both the front and back pattern sections will be complete and ready for the next level of professional pattern-making instruction.

Eric W. Stiles Sr. is a Master Bespoke Tailor, Designer and Fashion Educator with more than 40 years of professional experience in high-end fashion, tailoring and garment construction. Throughout his career, he has worked with internationally recognized fashion houses, including Brioni, Giorgio Armani, Polo Ralph Lauren and Tom Ford, where precision, quality and craftsmanship were essential to every garment.

Renowned for his precision, craftsmanship and approachable teaching style, Mr. Stiles has guided and inspired countless aspiring designers, sewers, tailors, alterations specialists and industry professionals. His instruction focuses on practical, professional techniques presented in a supportive, encouraging and stress-free learning environment.

Whether a student is a beginner or already experienced, learning under Mr. Stiles means gaining the skills, discipline and confidence needed to produce professional-quality work. Students receive not only technical instruction, but also the benefit of his international perspective, professional discipline and lifelong dedication to craftsmanship.
