Workshop Schedule Update

Because of ongoing and expected weather conditions, all upcoming workshops previously scheduled at Ivy Tech Valparaiso have been canceled as in-person classes and moved to an online format. The previously announced workshop dates will remain the same. This decision was made to protect the health and safety of all participants. Thank you for your understanding. We are keeping everyone impacted by these conditions in our thoughts and prayers and hope for safer, improved weather in the near future.

Most garments that look poorly constructed are not always suffering from a sewing problem. Often the real problem is fit. This professional online workshop teaches students how to begin recognizing the relationship between the human body and the garment that is being fitted to it.

A commercial sewing pattern is much more than paper pieces that are placed on fabric and cut. When properly understood, commercial patterns provide valuable information about garment construction, fit, proportions, design and the relationship between individual garment pieces.

This 2-part professional online workshop will help students understand how to read, evaluate and work with commercial patterns more effectively and with greater confidence.

PART 1 — Understanding the Commercial Pattern Learn how commercial patterns are organized, how the various pattern pieces work together and how important pattern symbols, markings, grainlines and construction information should be read and understood before cutting the fabric.
PART 2 — Using Commercial Patterns Professionally Learn how pattern pieces relate to the body and to one another, why commercial pattern sizing does not automatically guarantee proper fit, what should be evaluated before cutting fabric and how better pattern knowledge can improve fitting, sewing accuracy and garment construction.

Mr. Stiles has been teaching professional fashion education since 1989 and has instructed students through colleges, live classroom programs and online fashion education.

His teaching focuses on helping students understand not only how something is done, but why professional techniques work.
